In February1990, Mr.T.Ranald Templeton, P.E., the Department Head of Facilities and Operations for the pharmaceutical giant, Burroughs Wellcome Company, in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, installed a MagneGen magnetic water treatment system on a chillier-condenser-cooling tower system.

Mr. Templeton hired Nalco Chemical Co., to run a corrosion coupon test, in the system. Nalco reps, from Nalco Chemical Co.’s Raleigh, NC, office, led by Mr. Robert Downey, Area Manager, installed mild steel coupon, 19729, in Tower #1, on February 17, 1990, and removed it, on March 16, 1990. It was sent, for analysis, to the Nalco Analytical Laboratory, Laurel, MD. The lab reported, on April 3, 1990, in their Analysis No. CS 236884, corrosion rate have less than 0.1mpy. In spite of his own company’s test results, Mr. Downey objected to the system.

Anticipating this, Mr. Templeton had already ordered Nalco to run parallel corrosion coupon tests, for two more months, in two similar Burroughs Wellcome chiller-condenser-cooling tower systems, with the same water source one treated with chemicals, by IMCOR Chemical CO., and the other with MagneGen. Mr. Templeton informed Mr. Downey, that he would let the Chemical vs. No chemical tests determine which was the better system.

Copper and Mild Steel coupon tests were run, for two months, by Nalco, beginning, March 16, 1990. All coupon handling and system monitoring was conducted by the Nalco reps and Burroughs Wellcome engineers. No MagneGen personnel were involved, in any way. Burroughs Wellcome is a highly secured pharmaceutical research laboratory, with no unauthorized entry. The results of the parallel corrosion tests, comparing traditional chemical water treatment, with no chemical magnetic water treatment, were reported by Nalco Chemical Company Analytical Laboratory, Laurel, MD, as follows:

*(When asked for a deposit (scale) report, on the MagneGen coupons, the lab reported that there wasn’t enough to analyze!)
