J-Power

Equinor, Jera, J-Power to jointly bit for Japan's offshore wind projects

Norway's Equinor, Japan's Jera and Electric Power Development Co (J-Power) have formed a consortium to jointly submit a bid for offshore wind power projects in Akita, northern Japan, the companies said on Wednesday.

Japan's offshore power market is set to take off after the government last year brought in a law to encourage the development of wind farms, with the Japan Wind Power Association predicting the country's offshore wind power installed capacity to grow to 10 gigawatts(GW) in 2030.

The consortium plans to bid for the project off Noshiro city, Mitane town and Oga city as well as projects off Yurihonjo city.

Japanese government has identified 11 areas as potentially suitable for development in the first round, four of which were selected as promotion areas, which include the Noshiro and Yurihonjo projects.

Equinor, which has been building a renewables business focused on offshore wind, has set up an office in Tokyo in 2018 as it believes Japan is a growth market with high potential for both bottom fixed and floating offshore wind.

Akita is Equinor's first offshore wind opportunity in Japan.

Jera, which is the fuel and thermal power joint venture between Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings and Chubu Electric Power Co, owns a stake in the Formosa offshore wind projects in Taiwan.

J-Power is Japan's second-largest wind power producer.

All three companies have experiences in developing and operating large power generation projects around the world and they aim to build world-class offshore wind farms in Japan by bringing together their expertise, they said.

German utility RWE and Japan's Kyushu Electric Power are also considering a joint bid for the project off the coast of Yurihonjo while trading house Sumitomo Corp and its partners plan to bid for the project near Noshiro.
